Sir Peter Jackson Closes Wellington’s Chocolate Fish Cafe After 15 Years

The popular Chocolate Fish Cafe in Wellington will close its doors after 15 years of operation, a decision made by its landlord, renowned filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson. Owners John and Penny Pennington expressed their shock and devastation over the abrupt closure, which they were informed of on Tuesday.
The cafe, located in Shelly Bay, has been a staple in the community since its inception. In 2023, Sir Peter Jackson and his partner Dame Fran Walsh purchased the land where the cafe operates. Following their acquisition, they invested significantly in the building and surrounding area, which raised hopes for the cafe’s continued success.
In a statement shared on social media, the Penningtons conveyed their heartbreak. “This week, we were given the devastating blow, without warning, by the Head of Business Affairs for Sir Peter Jackson and Dame Fran Walsh, that they have decided to close our beloved cafe for good,” they wrote. The news has left many patrons and community members saddened, as the cafe has been a beloved gathering spot.
The decision to close the cafe comes after a period of investment and development in the area, suggesting a shift in direction for the property under Sir Peter Jackson’s ownership. While the reasons behind the closure remain unclear, the Penningtons have expressed gratitude for the support they received from the community throughout their time in business.
As Wellington mourns the loss of the Chocolate Fish Cafe, it serves as a reminder of the impact local businesses have on communities and the emotional connections they foster. The cafe’s closure marks the end of an era for the Penningtons and their loyal customers.
