According to MetService forecaster Michael Pauley, a front is forecasted to move onto the southern regions of the South Island this evening, starting a series of weather changes that could impact travel and outdoor activities.

Snowfall is anticipated to begin late tonight, with levels expected to reach as low as 600 metres. Road snowfall warnings will be in effect starting tomorrow morning, particularly affecting several key routes. “From late tonight, we’re expecting snow up to 600m, with road snowfall warnings coming into force tomorrow,” Pauley stated.

Weather Impact on Travel

The forecast indicates that snow will blanket many areas of the South Island above approximately 200 metres on both March 11 and 12, 2024. The central North Island’s high country may also experience snow accumulation at elevations exceeding 900 metres.

MetService has specifically issued warnings for Crown Range Rd and Milford Rd (SH94), where snowfall is expected to occur between 600 and 800 metres. These warnings will remain in effect from early tomorrow morning until around 13:00 local time, potentially causing hazardous driving conditions.
