Tauranga Retailers Fear One-Way Streets Could Force Closures

Plans by the Tauranga City Council to implement one-way streets in the city’s central business district (CBD) have raised serious concerns among local retailers. Business owners warn that this initiative could lead to increased closures of long-standing shops that have already faced significant challenges due to previous redevelopment projects.

The council aims to explore options for converting parts of Grey Street and The Strand into one-way thoroughfares. This change is intended to create opportunities for outdoor dining, events, and enhanced public life. Additionally, a trial one-way traffic system on Harington, Hamilton, Wharf, Spring, and Willow Streets might become permanent as part of a broader $83 million streetscaping programme scheduled over the next decade.

Julie Hammon, owner of Hammon Diamond Jeweller, expressed her opposition to the proposed changes. She described the potential one-way system as the “death knell” for many retail businesses that have already endured years of disruption from ongoing redevelopment efforts. Hammon emphasized that local shops have been struggling and that further alterations to traffic patterns could be detrimental to their survival.

The council’s plans come at a time when many businesses are still recovering from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Local retailers argue that accessibility is crucial for attracting customers, and one-way streets could complicate access for both shoppers and delivery vehicles.

Public feedback is being solicited to shape the future design and flow of these streets. The initiative aims to enhance the aesthetic and functional quality of Tauranga’s urban environment, but the potential repercussions for local businesses remain a significant concern.

As the council continues to seek community input, the outcome of this proposal could have lasting effects on the viability of retail in Tauranga’s CBD. Retailers worry that if the changes go ahead, many may not be able to withstand the additional challenges.
