Truck Driver Sentenced for Fatal Crash in Rotorua

A truck driver from Taupō has been sentenced for causing the death of an oncoming driver while using his mobile phone. Wayne Dion Young, 54, appeared in the Rotorua District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to careless driving that resulted in the death of Te Aorangi Hohepa. The tragic incident occurred on November 26, 2022, leaving a profound impact on Hohepa’s family.
Hohepa, aged 85, battled critical injuries for nine days following the collision before passing away on December 4, 2022. An esteemed matriarch, she was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. During the sentencing, her daughter, Tracey Hohepa, expressed her grief while holding a photograph of her mother emblazoned with the words “Love you mum.” Her victim impact statement resonated in the courtroom, capturing the heartbreak of a family mourning their loss.
According to the court, Young’s actions on the day of the crash involved him looking at his phone, which led to his vehicle crossing the center line. This careless behavior had catastrophic consequences, ultimately ending the life of an individual cherished by her family and community.
Tracey Hohepa recounted the moment she last spoke to her mother. She revealed that her mother had informed her she was going out briefly to pick up her husband. “She said she wouldn’t be long,” Tracey recalled, a statement that highlighted the suddenness of the tragedy that followed.
Judge John Bergseng presided over the case and acknowledged the profound impact of the incident on the Hohepa family. The court proceedings underscored the need for heightened awareness around the dangers of distracted driving, particularly the use of mobile phones while operating vehicles.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of negligent driving. Young’s sentence reflects a commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions on the road. While nothing can bring back Te Aorangi Hohepa, her family hopes that her story will encourage others to prioritize safety and avoid distractions while driving.
As communities continue to advocate for road safety, incidents like this one shed light on the ongoing challenges posed by distracted driving. The Hohepa family’s loss is a tragic example of the devastating effects that can arise from a moment of inattention.
