Trump Congratulates New York’s Mayor-Elect Mamdani at White House
President Donald Trump extended congratulations to Zohran Mamdani, the incoming mayor of New York City, during a meeting at the White House on Friday. This encounter marked the first in-person discussion between the two political figures, who have often found themselves on opposing sides of various issues including immigration and economic policy.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist and state lawmaker, won the mayoral race earlier this month. He requested the meeting with Trump to address pressing topics such as the cost of living and public safety. Following their private discussions, Trump expressed his enthusiasm for collaboration, stating, “We have one thing in common: we want this city of ours that we love to do very well.”
The meeting was characterized by mutual respect, with Mamdani describing it as “productive” and focused on shared goals for New York City. “It was a place of shared admiration and love… and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers,” he noted. Trump also remarked on the importance of setting aside partisan differences, emphasizing that he is pleased with Mamdani’s successful campaign.
Despite their differing political views, both leaders acknowledged the need to work together for the benefit of the city. Trump noted, “The better he does the happier I am.” Yet, the backdrop of their relationship includes Trump’s earlier threats to withdraw federal funding from New York, a city where nearly 40% of residents are foreign-born.
Mamdani has notably criticized several of Trump’s policies, particularly those related to immigration enforcement. While Trump has labeled Mamdani in derogatory terms without evidence, the mayor-elect has clarified his stance, advocating for Nordic-style democratic socialism rather than communism. In fact, he received endorsements from notable Jewish politicians and plans to appoint Jessica Tisch as New York’s Police Commissioner.
During the meeting, Trump appeared to soften his previous rhetoric, expressing anticipation for a civil discussion. He acknowledged that he had “hit him a little hard” in the past but expected their meeting to go smoothly. Earlier on the day of the meeting, Mamdani shared a light-hearted selfie on social media, capturing the moment on his flight to Washington.
Mamdani, who will be sworn in as mayor on January 1, 2024, emphasized his commitment to prioritize affordability issues in New York City, which has a population of approximately 8.5 million. He outlined his intention to address the high costs of housing, groceries, childcare, and public transportation in a city where residents pay nearly double the national average for rent.
Inflation continues to be a significant concern for many Americans, contributing to low approval ratings for Trump’s handling of the economy. According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, only 26% of Americans believe Trump is effectively managing the cost of living. The federal government is set to allocate US$7.4 billion to New York City for the fiscal year 2026, which accounts for about 6.4% of the city’s total budget, as reported by the New York State Comptroller.
The meeting comes after a series of pointed exchanges between the two leaders, with Mamdani asserting in his victory speech that New York is positioned to show the nation how to overcome Trump’s influence. Trump, responding to Mamdani’s comments, expressed confusion over his remarks but welcomed the dialogue, stating, “I don’t know exactly what he means by ‘turning the volume up.’ He has to be careful when he says that to me.”
Both leaders appear to be navigating a complex relationship, driven by shared interests in the welfare of New York City, despite their ideological divides. As Mamdani prepares to take office, his approach to collaboration with Trump will be closely watched.
