Urgent Recall of Kmart NZ Magic Sand Due to Asbestos Risk
Coloured sand products sold by Kmart NZ have tested positive for tremolite asbestos, leading to an urgent recall notice. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has advised consumers to stop using these products immediately to mitigate health risks. This recall affects four specific Kmart NZ Magic Sand items, including the 14-piece Sandcastle Building Set and the Blue, Green, and Pink Magic Sand sets.
This warning follows an earlier recall earlier this week for other coloured sand products. That alert prompted over 60 schools and early childhood centres to reach out to the Ministry of Education for assistance. The previous notice pertained to EC Rainbow Sand and Creatistics – Coloured Sand, which had been available at various retailers, including Paper Plus, Hobby Land, NZ School Shop, Office Products Depot, Discount Office, Acquire, and Qizzle.
The presence of asbestos in these products raises significant health concerns. Asbestos is classified as a carcinogen, meaning it can increase the risk of developing cancer, especially when individuals are exposed through inhalation of airborne asbestos fibres. The MBIE’s recall notice emphasizes the importance of consumer safety and urges anyone who has purchased the affected Magic Sand products to refrain from using them.
Consumers are advised to return any of the recalled items to the place of purchase for a full refund. The MBIE is working closely with Kmart NZ to ensure the safe removal of these products from store shelves and to protect public health.
As the situation unfolds, authorities will continue to monitor the impact of these recalls and provide updates as needed. Parents and guardians are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any concerns regarding the use of these products.
