Vanuatu’s Manoa Tarroux Makes Waves at World Junior Surfing Championships
The 16-year-old surfer from Vanuatu, Manoa Tarroux, has made history at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Championships held in Peru. On Sunday, Tarroux won his heat in the Under-18 category, becoming the first surfer from Vanuatu to achieve this milestone at a world championship event.
Competing against over 400 of the world’s top junior surfers, Tarroux scored 12 points to secure his victory. The competition not only showcases talent but also celebrates the sport of surfing on a global stage. Tarroux expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m very happy to win. It’s a lot of training and work to do this competition, so I’m very happy it pays off and to be here in Peru representing Vanuatu.”
Building a Future for Surfing in Vanuatu
Tarroux emphasized the importance of his success for the future of surfing in Vanuatu, hoping it would attract more support from corporate sponsors. He noted, “I think it’s just about getting some money in Vanuatu to have boards for the Vanuatu Surfing Association.” Tarroux aims to ensure access to surfing equipment for those who may not have the financial means to pursue the sport. “I hope we can get more boards so people who don’t have much money can surf every day and continue working on this,” he added.
This year, Vanuatu made its debut at the World Surfing Games, where Tarroux also competed. He is part of a promising group of young surfers representing the nation in Peru, alongside fellow competitors Danylo David and Sacha Ferry. The trio is supported by national coach Ben Johnson.
According to Michael Barthelmess, president of the Vanuatu Surfing Association (VSA), the organization is grateful for the sponsors that have made this opportunity possible. The Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC) has played a crucial role in helping the VSA work towards its long-term vision of competing in Olympic surfing. Barthelmess highlighted, “Their partnership continues to strengthen our pathway towards the Olympic stage. Their belief in our athletes and in the development of surfing as a national sport has been invaluable.”
The World Junior Championships are set to continue throughout the week, with final events scheduled for December 14, 2023. Tarroux’s historic performance marks a significant moment for surfing in Vanuatu, showcasing the potential of the nation’s young athletes on an international platform.
