Wildfire in Tongariro National Park Spreads to 1000 Hectares
A wildfire raging in Tongariro National Park has expanded dramatically, now covering an estimated 1000 hectares. The fire, which ignited on September 14, 2023, has triggered evacuations of trampers and prompted the closure of a major highway in the region.
Emergency services are working tirelessly to combat the blaze, with fresh crews of firefighters from Taranaki and Manawatu-Whanganui set to join the efforts this morning. Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed that the fire is currently out of control, as it continues to grow in size and intensity.
Evacuations and Highway Closures
Following the emergence of the fire, authorities evacuated individuals hiking in the area to ensure their safety. The nearby highway closure has further complicated access for emergency responders. Assistant Commander Nick West stated that the situation is being closely monitored, but the fire remains unchecked.
As of this morning, the cause of the fire has not been determined. Investigations are expected to begin once conditions allow for a safe assessment of the area. Local residents and visitors are urged to stay clear of the region while firefighting efforts continue.
Firefighting Efforts Underway
The deployment of additional firefighting crews is part of a coordinated response to manage the wildfire’s spread. The conditions in the Central Plateau have posed challenges, with dry weather contributing to the fire’s rapid expansion.
Fire and Emergency officials are emphasizing the importance of readiness and response, as the fire’s unpredictable behavior complicates containment efforts. With the current situation evolving, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
As the community faces this challenging situation, the focus remains on protecting lives and assets while working diligently to control the blaze in Tongariro National Park.
