Young Artists Illuminate Sky Tower During Winterfest Celebration

Four emerging artists from the Te Kowhai Print Trust have had their artwork displayed on the iconic Sky Tower, marking a significant moment for young creatives in Northland. This projection is part of a partnership for Winterfest between SkyCity Auckland Community Trust and various organizations nationwide, aiming to elevate the visibility of young talent in the arts.
The showcase features a collection of vibrant pieces that reflect the unique perspectives of these artists. Among the participants is Shayne Babe, a 25-year-old queer trans Māori artist from Whangārei. Babe draws inspiration from the striking lines and vivid colors found in classic superhero comics and manga, creating a fusion of cultural identity and contemporary influences.
Babe expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “It’s incredible to see my work projected on such a monumental structure. It’s a dream come true for any artist.” This sentiment is echoed by his peers, who share a passion for using their art as a medium for self-expression and cultural representation.
The collaboration with the SkyCity Auckland Community Trust underscores a commitment to supporting and promoting young artists. With projections running throughout the Winterfest period, the initiative serves not only as a platform for showcasing talent but also as a celebration of creativity within the community.
As viewers gather to witness the artwork illuminating the Sky Tower, the event creates a sense of connection and pride among the artists and the audience. The vibrant displays encourage conversations about art, culture, and the importance of supporting emerging voices in the creative landscape.
For many, this initiative is more than just an exhibition; it represents a step towards greater recognition for young artists in New Zealand. The Winterfest event continues to highlight the role of art in community engagement and the need for platforms that celebrate diverse expressions and narratives.
