Youths Brandish Machete in Robbery at Moerewa Convenience Store

Two youths allegedly armed with a machete conducted an aggravated robbery at a convenience store in Moerewa, located in New Zealand’s Far North region. The incident occurred yesterday, March 14, 2024, at approximately 6:50 AM, when the pair entered the store on Main Rd wearing ski masks.
According to Senior Sergeant Mark Barratt, the Mid North Area Response Manager, one of the youths brandished a machete while threatening both staff and a customer present in the store. The assailants demanded cigarettes and subsequently fled the scene with the stolen goods.
After the robbery, the youths reportedly escaped in two vehicles that authorities later determined were stolen. These vehicles were subsequently located abandoned in the nearby town of Kaikohe.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident, seeking any additional witnesses or information that could assist in apprehending the suspects. Local residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement as the search for the individuals continues.
The robbery has raised safety concerns in the community, prompting discussions about crime prevention measures. Authorities are working diligently to ensure that the public feels secure in their local establishments.
No injuries were reported during the robbery, but the incident has understandably left an impact on those who were present. Police are also emphasizing the importance of community vigilance in light of this alarming event.
