Actress Sushmita Sen has shared her harrowing experience of suffering a massive heart attack in February 2023 while filming for the popular series Aarya Season 3. In a candid interview on Divya Jain’s podcast, she revealed that a staggering 95% blockage in one of her arteries led to the life-threatening incident.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Sen made a remarkable decision to remain conscious during her life-saving surgery. “When you suffer a heart attack and stay conscious through it, you truly understand how close you came to the other side of life,” she stated. Her determination to stay alert throughout the ordeal not only highlighted her resilience but also provided a unique perspective on her near-death experience.

Survival and Recovery

Sushmita’s brush with death significantly altered her outlook on life. She emphasized, “Everything in life is transient — even a heart attack. If I hadn’t survived it, there would be no story. But once you do, there’s no point dwelling on the past.” This newfound perspective fueled her rapid recovery; she returned to set just 15 days after her surgery, despite medical advice to the contrary.

During the procedure, Sen’s “inner control freak” compelled her to stay awake, as she felt a strong need to engage with her medical team. “It was a choice — stay conscious and fight, or slip into unconsciousness and risk not waking up,” she explained. Throughout the surgery, she communicated with her doctors, urging them to expedite the process because of her commitment to the 500-member crew dependent on her.

Commitment to Her Team

Sushmita expressed her deep sense of responsibility towards her colleagues. “They were concerned about me, but I was concerned about them. You can’t shoot without me,” she remarked. Her determination to return to work underscores her leadership qualities and unwavering sense of duty.

The third season of Aarya premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in November 2023, with its second part scheduled for release in February 2024. Sushmita’s journey reflects not just a personal triumph over a life-threatening event but also an inspiring narrative of resilience and commitment to her craft.

Sen’s story resonates beyond the realm of entertainment, serving as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Her experience has not only garnered attention but also sparked conversations about heart health and the importance of seeking timely medical intervention. As she continues her career, her journey stands as a testament to recovery and the relentless pursuit of passion, even in the most challenging circumstances.
