Greytown Celebrates Opening of New Wheels Park with Community Fun
On July 15, 2023, the community of Greytown, New Zealand, celebrated the official opening of the much-anticipated Te Pap Ora o Mōroa – Greytown Wheels Park. This milestone came nearly two decades after the initial proposal for the facility was introduced. Under clear blue skies and bright summer sunshine, over 100 enthusiasts gathered to experience the new park situated across from the dog park on Pierce Street.
The event attracted a diverse crowd, ranging from young children on scooters to seasoned skateboarders. Among the attendees was Sid Kempton, a local resident and champion of the project, who expressed his excitement about the day. “We got some great feedback from everyone, from grandparents with their young grandkids to kids right through to even old school, often dads, who were really trying to relive their teenage years as skateboarders,” he noted. Kempton highlighted the unique atmosphere, stating, “It was pretty cool to see at least three generations there.”
Community members came from far and wide to partake in the festivities. Alex Tahau, who drove from Hastings, was eager to showcase his skills at what he considers one of New Zealand’s premier skate parks. “The sun came out and I’m skating,” he shared. “I just left here with so much motivation to get better.”
The park features a variety of ramps and obstacles designed to cater to all skill levels, fostering an inclusive environment for both beginners and experienced riders. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many stating that the facility is a significant addition to the community.
As the event unfolded, families and friends took to the ramps, exploring every corner of the park. Children laughed and cheered as they attempted new tricks, while parents watched with pride. The sense of camaraderie and shared passion for wheeled sports was palpable throughout the afternoon.
This new facility is expected to not only enhance recreational opportunities for local youth but also to serve as a community hub for events and gatherings. With its opening, Greytown has made a substantial investment in its future, providing residents with a space for physical activity and social connection.
As the sun set on a successful opening day, the Greytown Wheels Park stands as a testament to the perseverance and dedication of its supporters. With plans for future events and competitions, this vibrant addition to the community is poised to attract even more visitors and foster a love for wheeled sports for years to come.
