The council has confirmed a new governance structure aimed at improving operational efficiency and communication within the region. This decision, made during a meeting last week, is intended to simplify governance processes and sharpen the council’s strategic focus. The new system will facilitate better collaboration between elected officials, staff, and the community.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Under the revised structure, Cr Neville Phillips will lead the regional relationships portfolio, working closely with Mayor Ben Bell. Their responsibilities will include representing Gore at regional forums such as WasteNet and Civil Defence Committees. This role is crucial, especially with potential amalgamation discussions on the horizon. Their portfolio will encompass areas including three waters management, roading, solid waste, council property, and reserves, focusing on asset management, funding, compliance, and long-term service planning.

Cr Andy Fraser will oversee the recreation portfolio, while Cr Paul McPhail will manage the arts portfolio. Together, they will strategize and communicate effectively with various groups and stakeholders across the region. Their responsibilities include managing parks and reserves, libraries, the art gallery, and the Māruawai Centre, ensuring that community needs and interests are met.

Committee Leadership and New Council Members

The Risk and Assurance Committee has yet to announce its independent chair. However, Cr Torrone Smith, a newcomer to the council, will serve as the deputy chair. Another new member, Cr Mel Cupit, will also participate in committee discussions alongside existing councillors.

This new governance structure reflects the council’s commitment to enhancing its operational framework and improving service delivery to the community. With these changes, officials hope to foster a more responsive and transparent governance model that meets the evolving needs of the region.
