Ami and Sagar, a young Kiwi-Indian couple, embarked on an adventurous journey in September 2023, leaving behind their stable jobs to travel across New Zealand in their white travel van, named Wander Bee. Their decision to embrace van life marks a significant lifestyle shift, allowing them to explore the country while redefining their understanding of home and comfort.

The couple’s journey began as a personal exploration of what it means to start anew in their 30s. Hailing from Surat, Gujarat, Ami and Sagar envisioned their time on the road as an “adult gap year,” a concept that emphasizes taking a break from traditional career paths to focus on personal growth and exploration. With a meticulously planned budget of $160 per day, they are experiencing the stunning landscapes of Aotearoa while practicing freedom camping.

“We didn’t have the luxury of an adult gap year growing up in India, but we wanted to experience it,” they shared. Initially, convincing their families about their decision took time, as they faced questions and concerns. “We communicated extensively, sharing examples of successful Indian creators who have ventured into similar paths,” they explained.

Having spent over a decade living in New Zealand and holding citizenship, the couple’s love for travel compelled them to quit their six-figure jobs. They undertook significant planning, saving, and budgeting before making this leap. “Our initial plan was just one year of travel, but we saved a bit more and decided to fully embrace this lifestyle,” Ami noted.

Their journey commenced in 2024 with travels across Asia and parts of Eastern and Central Europe. Upon returning to New Zealand in August 2025, they decided to experience their adopted home through the lens of their van. “We know New Zealand well, so it felt right to explore it further after leaving our full-time jobs,” Sagar added.

Adjusting to life as digital nomads proved challenging. “The logistics of this lifestyle were quite complex,” Ami explained. They have since evolved their travel content from long-form YouTube videos to a more dynamic presence on Instagram, where they have grown their following from 2,000 to over 30,000 since June 2025.

Their Instagram page, @sagarandami, now operates as a full-time venture. Ami focuses on the business aspects, including logistics and communication, while Sagar handles creative tasks like editing and marketing. “We divide our days into work days and filming days,” Ami said. They collaborate with brands such as the New Zealand Tourism Board and Kiwi Rail, helping increase visibility for their partners.

For those considering a similar lifestyle, Ami and Sagar emphasize three essential rules. “First, be flexible. You may find yourself in unexpected locations. Second, respect all local laws and camping regulations. Freedom camping in New Zealand requires responsibility, including leaving no litter behind. Third, download useful apps to streamline your experience,” they advised.

Currently traveling through the South Island, the couple has fallen in love with the Mackenzie region, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and tranquility. As they continue their journey, Ami and Sagar aspire to save $20,000 and reach 50,000 followers by the end of the year, allowing them to plan their next adventures.

Their ongoing story is a blend of discipline and aspiration, showcasing what it truly means to start over in one’s 30s. As they navigate the challenges and joys of van life, Ami and Sagar are discovering the depths of travel and personal growth, one breathtaking backdrop at a time.
