Art Director Yolanta Woldendorp Thrives on Lifestyle Block in Helensville
Art director Yolanta Woldendorp has embraced a fulfilling lifestyle on a 3.2-hectare block in Helensville, New Zealand, where she shares her life with partner Odessa Holmes, two horses, and two cats. Woldendorp’s passion for design and nature recently culminated in the publication of her book, New Zealand Rustic, which showcases homes inspired by the natural world.
From Australia to New Zealand
Originally hailing from Perth, Western Australia, Woldendorp grew up surrounded by wildlife, including snakes and lizards. Her father, Richard Woldendorp, was a renowned photographer who published 30 books and received the Order of Australia honour. This artistic lineage inspired Woldendorp’s love for photography, although she ultimately chose to pursue a career in graphic design.
By the age of 21, Woldendorp became a magazine art director, working for various prestigious titles in Australia. However, seeking new opportunities, she relocated to New Zealand in 1990. In 2005, she and writer Kate Coughlan founded NZ Life & Leisure Magazine, which they successfully ran until last year. Since then, Woldendorp has focused on freelancing and book production, including her recent work with chef Nadia Lim.
Creating a Sustainable Haven
Woldendorp’s current residence is a two-storey American barn-style home constructed from recycled timber. The couple purchased the property 15 years ago, seeking ample space for their horses. The house, which is over 40 years old, features beautiful sash windows, and Woldendorp has undertaken numerous renovations, including the installation of solar panels and the design of a new kitchen and bathroom.
The couple’s commitment to sustainability extends to the land itself. Initially in poor condition, the paddocks have been revitalised through extensive clearing and fence repairs. They are fortunate to have 50-year-old heritage fruit trees, including plums, peaches, and two large avocado trees. In addition, Woldendorp has created three sizable vegetable beds, enabling them to grow their own food, which not only reduces costs but also contributes to their well-being and fitness.
Woldendorp expresses a deep appreciation for her rural surroundings, stating, “I don’t think I could live in the city again. I love being surrounded by trees and experiencing the changing seasons.” The couple enjoys the luxury of viewing their horses from their windows while remaining close enough to Auckland to meet friends and visit local galleries. She describes Helensville as a classic old town, where the charm of rural life remains intact.
Local attractions like Woodhill Forest and Muriwai Beach provide Woldendorp and Holmes with ample opportunities to ride their horses and connect with nature. Their culinary experiences in the area are equally delightful, with Woldendorp praising a local restaurant, The Butcher Baker, which operates from an old bakery and serves dishes cooked over an open fire, including charred cauliflower and exquisite crayfish tortellini. She also enjoys the offerings at The Real Bread Project, particularly their almond croissants and multi-grain sourdough.
As Woldendorp continues to thrive in her picturesque environment, her story reflects a harmonious blend of creativity, sustainability, and a deep connection to nature.
