Swiss National Pleads Guilty in Fatal Canterbury Crash
A Swiss national has pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving following a fatal crash in Canterbury that resulted in the death of a woman. The incident occurred on November 19, 2023, on State Highway 73 near Sheffield. The driver, Patrick Keusch, was arrested shortly after the two-vehicle collision, with police confirming the charge the following day.
In a somber appearance at the Christchurch District Court on Monday, Keusch, aged 32, expressed his remorse while addressing the court. He appeared visibly emotional as his defence lawyer, Grant Fletcher, entered a guilty plea on his behalf. “Clearly, this case is a terrible tragedy,” Fletcher remarked, highlighting the profound impact of the incident.
Keusch’s bail conditions prevent him from leaving New Zealand, as he surrendered his passport following his arrest. Additionally, he has been disqualified from driving. The court was informed that Keusch is willing to engage in restorative justice practices. This includes offering emotional harm reparation payments to the victim’s family, who are based in the West Coast region of New Zealand.
Fletcher emphasized the importance of resolving the matter swiftly, advocating for a quick finalization of the restorative justice process and scheduling a sentencing date. “I’m very concerned for the defendant’s wellbeing,” he noted, indicating the emotional toll the case has taken on Keusch.
The court has scheduled a sentencing hearing for January 16, 2024, where the full implications of the charge will be discussed. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic consequences of careless driving and the lasting impact on families and communities.
