Dunedin Man Sentenced Following Violent Alcohol-Fueled Incidents

A man from Dunedin, New Zealand, has been sentenced to 13 months in prison after a series of violent incidents linked to alcohol consumption. Nico Erik Bloemsaat, aged 33, appeared in the Dunedin District Court this week, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including breaching a protection order, intentional damage, and unlawfully entering a property.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Bloemsaat’s recent actions followed a history of abuse, including a prior conviction for strangulation. Judge David Robinson expressed grave concerns about the potential for further violence, stating, “That assumes real significance because it’s a reliable predictor of a future fatal attack.” His remarks highlighted the ongoing risk faced by the victim in this case.

Bloemsaat’s troubles began anew just two weeks after his release from prison in August. The court heard he stalked his former partner by lingering outside her workplace and inquiring about her whereabouts from her colleagues. When the victim realized he was there, she sought refuge in an office and contacted Bloemsaat’s mother for assistance. He departed when informed that police were on their way.

Despite the legal proceedings against him, Bloemsaat continued to harass the victim later that same day, making 13 phone calls to her. On September 1, 2023, he was charged with breaching the protection order, yet was granted bail during his court appearance.

The situation escalated when Bloemsaat showed up at the victim’s home, shouting accusations about her current partner’s presence inside. His disruptive behavior culminated in violence when he broke a window and physically confronted the partner. Following a brief scuffle, he was apprehended by police shortly after fleeing the scene.

Defense counsel Sarah Cochrane noted that alcohol played a significant role in Bloemsaat’s offenses. She stated that he is now committed to undergoing residential rehabilitation and acknowledges the need to sever ties with his former partner. Judge Robinson emphasized the urgency for Bloemsaat to address his alcohol issues, cautioning that any future offenses would result in lengthier prison sentences.
