Historic Arrowtown Home for Sale, Boasts Unique Heritage Features
A significant piece of Arrowtown’s history is now available for purchase. The heritage home, classified as a category 2 historic building, is situated at the corner of Anglesea and Merioneth Streets. Originally constructed in 1878 for the town’s first magistrate, this notable residence later served as accommodation for Catholic nuns for approximately 30 years.
The property underwent expansions in the early 1900s, adding two bedrooms to its original structure. More recent renovations were carried out by the current owners from the mid-2000s, with a design led by Queenstown architect Michael Wyatt. These updates sought to maintain the home’s historical integrity while enhancing its livability.
According to Tracey Laker, an agent with Bayleys Arrowtown who is marketing the property alongside colleague Todd Weeks, the vendors focused on preserving as much of the original character as possible during the restoration. Many of the interior schist walls, which had been covered in plaster, were carefully chipped back to reveal the original stone, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era.
In addition to the main house, the latest extension incorporates an outbuilding believed to have originated from the former gold mining settlement of Macetown. This structure has been transformed into a bunk room, further enhancing the property’s appeal as a unique living space.
The grounds of the home are equally captivating, featuring established gardens and mature fruit trees, adding to the charm of this heritage site. The blend of historical significance and modern amenities makes this property a rare find in the competitive real estate market of Arrowtown.
As the sale progresses, potential buyers are encouraged to appreciate the depth of history and the meticulous care that has gone into maintaining this remarkable home.
