US Justice Department Releases Epstein Records Amid Political Pressure

The move follows months of political contention, particularly among supporters of former President Donald Trump, who previously resisted calls to disclose all records associated with Epstein’s investigations.

In recent months, Trump’s administration faced criticism for its perceived reluctance to make the investigative documents public. Initially, Trump urged Republican lawmakers to oppose the legislation, cautioning that the release of sensitive internal records could establish a troubling precedent. Yet, many of his supporters accused his administration of concealing Epstein’s connections to influential individuals and details about his death, which was ruled a suicide in 2019 while he was incarcerated in a Manhattan jail.

As the political landscape shifts in preparation for the November 2026 midterm elections, Trump has sought to distance himself from the Epstein controversy. He has pledged to declassify government files related to Epstein if he is re-elected. One email revealed Epstein stating that Trump “knew about the girls,” although it did not clarify the context. In response to the growing scrutiny, Trump instructed the DOJ to investigate Epstein’s connections to former Democratic President Bill Clinton and the investment bank JPMorgan. Despite pressure from the White House to postpone legislative action, US lawmakers overwhelmingly voted to pass a bill mandating the release of DOJ records. Trump subsequently signed the bill into law.

Trump has consistently denied any knowledge of Epstein’s sex trafficking activities, acknowledging only that they were friends until their relationship soured prior to Epstein’s conviction in 2008. Previous documents have revealed that even after his conviction, Epstein maintained communication with numerous high-profile figures, including former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, Clinton’s former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, PayPal founder Peter Thiel, and Britain’s Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was stripped of his royal title due to his connections with Epstein.

Responses from representatives of Bannon, Thiel, and Mountbatten-Windsor regarding their interactions with Epstein have not been provided to Reuters. Meanwhile, Summers has distanced himself from various prestigious positions, expressing deep regret for maintaining correspondence with Epstein up until 2019. Documents released last November revealed that Summers had even sought personal advice from Epstein.

In a notable financial development, JPMorgan agreed to pay $290 million in 2023 to settle claims from Epstein’s victims, relating to accusations that the bank overlooked Epstein’s sex trafficking operations. The bank retained Epstein as a client for five years following his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor.
