Dame Lisa Carrington Embraces Family Life Before World Championships

Dame Lisa Carrington, New Zealand’s celebrated kayak champion, is experiencing a rare pause in her demanding athletic career. For the first time in 16 years, she has taken a significant break from international competition, allowing her to focus on personal time and family life. Despite her commitment to training six days a week in preparation for the upcoming Olympics, Carrington’s recent months have been marked by an unexpected chance to recharge.
The break has provided Carrington with the opportunity to enjoy moments she often misses while traveling for competitions. From spending weekends with her husband, Michael “Bucky” Buck, to enjoying quality time in her hometown of Ōhope, and cuddling with her cavoodle, Colin, she has embraced the joys of everyday life.
Balancing Competition and Personal Life
While Carrington has enjoyed this slower pace, she admits to feeling a tinge of “FOMO,” or fear of missing out, as her teammates continued to compete without her. “It’s been so nice to have extra time and space, but I’ve definitely had a bit of FOMO knowing my teammates were all off racing without me,” she shared in a recent conversation. The transition to a more relaxed lifestyle has not been easy for the athlete, who is known for her intense dedication to the sport.
Just days after her reflections, Carrington found herself back in competitive mode. She swiftly traveled to Italy to compete in the Canoe Sprint World Championships, stepping in for fellow Kiwi paddler Olivia Brett, who had to withdraw due to a forearm injury. “It’s not something I thought was on the cards this year, but I feel grateful to be in a position where I can show up – for her, and for the K4. I’m excited,” Carrington stated.
This unexpected return to racing underscores her adaptability and commitment to her team. Carrington’s willingness to jump back into competition highlights not only her athletic resilience but also her strong sense of camaraderie among fellow paddlers.
As the world of competitive kayaking gears up for the next Olympic Games, Carrington’s blend of family life and athletic dedication serves as an inspiration. Her journey showcases the importance of balance, self-compassion, and the ability to embrace both personal and professional challenges. With the upcoming competition in Italy, she aims to make her mark once again on the international stage while cherishing the moments she has spent away from the spotlight.
