The New Zealand band Mild Orange has made a significant impact in the music world with their latest album, The//Glow. Since their debut album Foreplay in 2018, tracks like ‘Some Feeling’ and ‘Freak In Me’ have garnered tens of millions of streams, showcasing the group’s evolution and growing fanbase.

Embracing New Influences in London

Now based in London, where they have lived since 2022, the four friends from Otago University draw inspiration from the city’s vibrant nightlife and their experiences touring across the United States. According to band member Mehrtens, the transition from New Zealand to a massive urban center like London was challenging, but three years later, they have embraced the “strong” live music scene.

As an independent group, Mild Orange operates outside traditional record label constraints, fostering a unique relationship with their audience. “Over the years, we’ve cultivated a lovely listenership and really made an effort to connect with people in all corners of the earth,” Mehrtens explained. The band takes pride in being a Kiwi group whose music resonates globally.

Mehrtens appreciates the creative freedom that comes with being independent, stating, “Maybe [record] labels are scared to talk to us or something.” This autonomy allows them to explore a variety of sounds without being confined to a specific genre. “We just write how we feel or reflect on what we’ve been living at the time,” he noted, emphasizing their approach to songwriting.

New Single and Personal Reflections

Their new track, ‘My Light,’ exemplifies this creative journey. The song features a simple structure with only two chords but is layered with intricate details. “I’m so glad we persisted with it – it’s a bit of a banger,” Mehrtens remarked, underscoring the effort that went into crafting the track.

‘My Light’ also serves as a heartfelt tribute to Mehrtens’ wife, Summer. He reflects on the pressures of life and how she provides support during challenging times. “The weight of the world can get a bit intense sometimes, but she’s always there for me,” he shared, revealing the personal nature of their music.

Mild Orange continues to thrive as an independent band, focusing on their passion for music and travel. Their journey from New Zealand to London has enriched their sound and allowed them to create music that resonates with audiences worldwide.
