Mild Orange Celebrates Global Sound on New Album The//Glow

Mild Orange, the New Zealand-based band, has made waves in the music scene with their latest album, The//Glow, released in 2023. Following the success of their 2018 debut, Foreplay, and popular tracks like ‘Some Feeling’ and ‘Freak In Me’, which have amassed tens of millions of streams, the band is now paying homage to their experiences in London and their passion for rock music.
Having relocated to London in 2022, the four friends from Otago University have embraced the vibrant nightlife of their new city. The transition from New Zealand to a bustling metropolis posed challenges, but after three years, they are thriving within the city’s dynamic live music scene.
Independent Approach and Global Reach
As an independent band, Mild Orange has carved a niche for themselves as an “internet band.” According to Mehrtens, one of the band members, their experience in the online music landscape has been largely positive and free from the negativity that can often plague emerging artists. “Over the years, we’ve just cultivated a lovely listenership and really made an effort to connect with people in all corners of the earth,” he explains. The band takes pride in their Kiwi roots and aims to create music that resonates with audiences worldwide.
The independence afforded to them allows Mild Orange to maintain creative control over their projects. “It’s great that we can steer our own creative project with utmost care,” Mehrtens says, suggesting that traditional record labels may be hesitant to engage with their unique approach. Their music does not conform to a specific genre; instead, they express their feelings and experiences through their art.
New Tracks and Personal Inspirations
Their latest single, ‘My Light’, exemplifies their innovative spirit. The track features a simple two-chord structure, yet it is layered with complexity. “I’m so glad we persisted with it – it’s a bit of a banger,” Mehrtens reflects on the creative journey behind the song. The lyrics touch on themes of digital media and personal connection, while also serving as a tribute to Mehrtens’ wife, Summer. He notes, “The weight of the world can get a bit intense sometimes, but she’s always there for me.”
As they continue to evolve, the band remains committed to their roots while exploring new sounds and ideas. The release of The//Glow marks another milestone for Mild Orange, showcasing their ability to blend personal experiences with broader musical influences. With their sights set on global audiences, they are poised to make a lasting impact on the international music landscape.
