Mild Orange Celebrates Musical Journey with New Album The//Glow

Mild Orange, an indie band originally from Dunedin, New Zealand, has gained significant attention since their 2018 debut album, Foreplay. Their tracks, including ‘Some Feeling’ and ‘Freak In Me’, have reached tens of millions of streams, showcasing their growing popularity. The band’s latest project, The//Glow, reflects their experiences in London, where they have resided since 2022, and their fondness for heartland rock, which has accompanied them on countless road trips across the United States.
Transitioning from the serene surroundings of New Zealand to the bustling environment of London posed challenges for the four friends from Otago University. However, after three years in the vibrant city, they are embracing the “strong” live music scene. Lead vocalist Mehrtens noted, “Moving from New Zealand to a massive city like London was quite an adjustment, but now we’re enjoying the opportunities it presents.”
Independent Success and Creative Control
As an independent band, Mild Orange has cultivated a unique presence in the music industry. They describe themselves as an “internet band,” thriving outside the traditional record label system. Mehrtens expressed satisfaction with their journey in the online music landscape, stating, “We’ve had a super positive and mostly troll-free experience.” This independence allows them to steer their creative direction and connect with fans globally. “We’ve just cultivated a lovely listenership and really made an effort to connect with people in all corners of the earth,” he added.
The band’s approach to music is fluid and spontaneous. “We just write how we feel or reflect on what we’ve been living at the time,” Mehrtens explained. While they do not confine themselves to a specific genre, they emphasize the importance of innovation. Their latest single, ‘My Light’, exemplifies this ethos. In the song, Mehrtens reflects on the influence of digital media, singing, “When I’m dark, you stay bright.” He acknowledged the challenges of crafting the track, which primarily features two chords but incorporates various layers. “I’m so glad we persisted with it – it’s a bit of a banger,” he remarked.
Personal Connections and Inspirations
Beyond musical themes, ‘My Light’ holds a personal significance for Mehrtens. The song serves as a tribute to his wife, Summer, who has been a source of support during challenging times. “The weight of the world can get a bit intense sometimes, but she’s always there for me,” he shared.
As Mild Orange continues to navigate their musical journey, their commitment to authenticity and personal storytelling remains at the forefront. With the release of The//Glow, the band not only pays homage to their roots but also embraces the new experiences and connections formed in their adopted city. Their passion for music and travel intertwines, promising listeners an engaging and relatable sound that resonates across diverse audiences.
