Discover a Unique Mai Tai Recipe with Amaretto Twist

A new take on the classic Mai Tai cocktail has emerged, featuring the addition of amaretto liqueur, which enhances the drink’s flavor profile. This innovative recipe serves two and is designed for those looking to add a little twist to their cocktail repertoire.
The ingredients required for this unique version include 4 shots (120ml) of spiced rum, with a recommended choice being Sailor Jerry, 1.5 shots (45ml) of lime juice, 1 shot (30ml) of Cointreau, 0.5 shot (15ml) of demerara syrup, 0.5 shot (15ml) of amaretto liqueur, and 1 shot (30ml) of orgeat. A large handful of fresh mint leaves and 2 lime wedges or wheels are used for garnish.
To prepare the cocktail, all ingredients except for the mint and lime should be combined in a shaker filled with ice. The mixture should be shaken vigorously until the outside of the shaker becomes frosty. The contents, including the ice, are then poured into two tumblers, topped with additional ice, and garnished with mint and a lime wedge.
Orgeat, an important component of this cocktail, is an almond-based sugar syrup. While it can be purchased from some liquor stores, a homemade version is preferred for its superior flavor. The simplified recipe for orgeat calls for 1 cup (250ml) of unsweetened almond milk, 2 cups of caster sugar, 3 teaspoons of almond essence, and 1 teaspoon of orange blossom water, which is optional. Additionally, 45ml of brandy can be included for an extra kick.
To make the homemade orgeat, combine the almond milk and caster sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and bring the mixture to a simmer before removing it from the heat. The remaining ingredients are then added and mixed thoroughly. Once cooled, the syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
This recipe is featured in the book The Hungry Cook by Olivia Galletly, published by Allen & Unwin. The book offers a range of creative recipes that inspire culinary exploration. With its refreshing twist on the classic Mai Tai, this cocktail is perfect for summer gatherings or a cozy evening at home.
