UB40’s Ali Campbell Set for New Zealand Tour in February 2026
English singer Ali Campbell is gearing up for a return to New Zealand as part of the six-show Kingston Calling 2026 summer festival tour. The tour, headlined by UB40 featuring Campbell, will culminate in a performance at the Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth on February 14, 2026. This marks the band’s first complete tour of New Zealand since 2019 and their first performance at the iconic venue since 2016.
Campbell, who departed the original lineup of UB40 in 2008, has since led his own world-touring ensemble. Known for his distinctive voice, he has been the driving force behind hit songs like “Red Red Wine” and “Kingston Town,” which contributed to the band selling over 70 million records worldwide. Reflecting on the band’s long-standing relationship with New Zealand, Campbell reminisced about their inaugural tour in 1983, describing it as a thrilling experience akin to “going to the moon.”
During their first tour, the band was welcomed warmly by local audiences. Once they arrived at their hotel, they joined an anti-apartheid demonstration, which led to a memorable connection with the local reggae band The Herbs. Campbell credited them with helping the band integrate into New Zealand’s music scene and forming friendships that have endured over the years.
Celebrating Reggae Culture and Community
UB40 has a rich history of performances in New Plymouth, having first played there in 1989. Campbell expressed excitement about returning to the Bowl of Brooklands, noting the crowd’s passion for reggae music. “The people love peace, love, and unity,” he said. “It’s generally party time, so we always have a good gig.” He fondly recalled the energy of the audience, particularly when fans jumped into the lake in front of the stage during performances.
As Campbell prepares for the upcoming tour, he views it as a continuation of a global journey. Even as he approaches his 67th birthday the day after the New Plymouth concert, he considers life on the road to be a celebratory experience with what he describes as “18 of my best mates.”
“The travelling’s the hardest thing really,” he admitted, acknowledging the toll it takes on his body clock. “But apart from the travelling, everything’s just fun.” Looking ahead, Campbell shared plans for additional performances across Australia, the South Pacific, India, Africa, Europe, and the United States throughout 2026.
As the excitement builds for the Kingston Calling 2026 tour, fans can look forward to a vibrant celebration of music, community, and the enduring legacy of UB40, reaffirming the band’s deep connection with New Zealand.
