Authorities Intensify Search for Brown University Shooter
The search for the gunman responsible for the tragic shooting at Brown University continues as authorities enter the third day of their investigation. The incident, which occurred within the university’s engineering and physics building, claimed the lives of two students and left nine others injured. As the community mourns, officials have released a person of interest in the case, stating that evidence has shifted focus to a different direction.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha confirmed the release of the individual early on Monday morning. He noted that while there was “some degree of evidence” linking the person to the crime, further investigation indicated that the evidence was not conclusive. Authorities now face the uncertainty of whether the assailant has fled the state.
The Investigation and Victims’ Information
The two deceased students have been identified, with the family of Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman, confirming his death. Brown University President Christina Paxson stated that all victims are students, underscoring the tragedy’s impact on the university community. Authorities have opted not to release identifying information about the other victims until all families are notified.
As for the injured, Rhode Island Hospital reported that nine patients were treated for gunshot wounds. Among them, six individuals are in critical but stable condition, one remains in critical condition, another is stable, and one has been discharged as of Sunday evening.
Campus Response and Security Measures
In response to the incident, Brown University has cancelled all classes for the remainder of the semester. Students have been permitted to return home early as a precautionary measure. Mayor of Providence Brett Smiley announced that law enforcement presence on campus and throughout the city has been increased to ensure the safety of the community.
The university has also doubled its security staffing, although officials have stated there is no immediate threat to the campus. Surveillance footage of the suspect released earlier in the investigation remains relevant, according to authorities, who are urging anyone with information to come forward.
As the search continues, the focus remains on providing support to the affected families and the university community. The investigation into this tragic event is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
