Art Director Yolanta Woldendorp Embraces Rural Life in New Zealand
Art director Yolanta Woldendorp has found fulfillment in a tranquil lifestyle on a 3.2-hectare property in Helensville, New Zealand, where she shares her life with partner Odessa Holmes, two horses, and two cats. This shift comes after a successful career that includes producing and art directing the book New Zealand Rustic, which celebrates homes inspired by nature and was published in October 2023.
Originally from Perth in Western Australia, Woldendorp recalls a childhood spent among snakes and lizards in the bush. Her father, the late Richard Woldendorp, was a renowned photographer who published 30 books and received the Order of Australia for his contributions to the arts. Inspired by her father’s work, Woldendorp initially pursued photography but eventually transitioned to graphic design, becoming a magazine art director by age 21.
In 1990, seeking new opportunities, she moved to New Zealand, where she quickly fell in love with the country. Together with writer Kate Coughlan, Woldendorp co-founded NZ Life & Leisure Magazine in 2005, managing it until last year. She has continued her passion for book design, contributing to projects including Nadia Lim’s latest book.
A Dream Home Full of Character
Woldendorp’s current residence is a unique, 40-year-old American barn-style house constructed from recycled timber, featuring beautiful sash windows. After living in the same home in Birkenhead for 17 years, she and Holmes sought a property that offered ample space for their horses. They moved to Helensville 15 years ago, drawn to the potential of their new home.
Significant renovations have transformed the property, including repairs to the windows, a fresh coat of paint, and the installation of solar panels. Woldendorp and Holmes also designed and built a new kitchen and bathroom, incorporating recycled materials and personal touches such as pressed black tin for the kitchen splashback, reflecting Woldendorp’s Australian heritage.
When they purchased the property, the paddocks were in poor condition. Since then, they have invested considerable effort into restoring the land, including clearing debris and mending fences. Their hard work has rewarded them with a flourishing garden featuring 50-year-old heritage fruit trees, including plums, peaches, and two large avocado trees. Additionally, Woldendorp has created three substantial vegetable beds, allowing the couple to grow their own food, which not only saves money but also promotes a healthier lifestyle.
Community and Nature at Heart
Woldendorp expresses a deep connection to her rural surroundings. “I don’t think I could live in the city again,” she states, highlighting her enjoyment of the trees and the changing seasons. With the ability to view her horses from her window, she appreciates the balance of rural life while remaining close to Auckland for social activities and cultural experiences.
Helensville retains its classic charm, with a community atmosphere that allows for casual attire, such as wearing Red Band gumboots to the local supermarket. Woldendorp enjoys the proximity to outdoor recreational areas, including Woodhill Forest and Muriwai Beach, where she can ride her horses and immerse herself in nature.
Dining options in the area also appeal to Woldendorp. She cites The Butcher Baker, located in a former bakery on Commercial Road, as her favorite restaurant. The establishment is known for its open-fire cooking, with standout dishes like charred cauliflower and crayfish tortellini. Another local gem, The Real Bread Project on Mill Road, offers enticing treats, particularly their almond croissants and multi-grain sourdough.
Woldendorp’s journey from a bustling city life to a serene rural existence illustrates a personal commitment to both creativity and community. As she nurtures her passions for art and nature, she continues to inspire those around her with her dedication to a fulfilling and balanced lifestyle.
