Dunedin Bar Owner Wins $30,000 Hospitality Scholarship

Jacqueline Jubel, a 29-year-old bar owner from Dunedin, has been awarded the $30,000 Visa New Zealand Hospitality Scholarship for her exceptional dedication and leadership in the hospitality sector. Originally from Germany, Jubel’s journey into this field began when she arrived in New Zealand on a working holiday visa, seeking to improve her English while exploring the country.

An Unexpected Path to Hospitality

When Jubel started working in New Zealand’s hospitality industry, holding conversations in English was a challenge. She began waiting tables in restaurants as a means to travel and connect with others. Reflecting on her early experiences, she described her entry into hospitality as “almost by accident.” Now, with a polished Kiwi accent, she is astonished by the recognition she has received.

“It’s surreal,” Jubel stated. “What started as a job quickly turned into a passion for creating memorable dining experiences, with guests leaving delighted and smiling.” Her deep appreciation for New Zealand’s relaxed lifestyle, breathtaking scenery, and renowned wineries led her to pursue further education in wine, obtaining sommelier qualifications from institutions in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, and New Zealand.

Achievements and Future Aspirations

Over the past seven years, Jubel has climbed the ranks in the hospitality industry, ultimately managing No 7 Balmac. In June 2023, she opened her own pop-up wine bar, The Cellar, showcasing her commitment to the field. Jubel is the third recipient of the Visa scholarship, which was established in 2023 in collaboration with the Wellington Culinary Events Trust to support emerging talent in hospitality.

The scholarship package includes a five-day international placement, flights and accommodation, access to a major industry event, a year-long mentorship, personal brand coaching, and the opportunity to run an event at Visa Wellington On a Plate 2026. Joshua Ross, a scholarship judge and restaurant owner from Lower Hutt, commended Jubel’s strong knowledge and commitment to her team, stating she is “a step above the rest.”

“Having spent seven years progressing through roles within one restaurant, it’s evident she’s highly valued by her employers and her team,” Ross added. “Several staff members have even joined because of her.” Jubel expressed her gratitude for the scholarship, saying she feels honoured and “very excited” about the future opportunities it presents.

“Great hospitality is all about fostering curiosity, confidence, and connection,” she noted. “Opportunities like this scholarship continue building the knowledge to create that experience.” As for her plans on how to utilise the scholarship, Jubel mentioned that she is still considering the possibilities ahead.

Jubel’s story exemplifies the potential for personal and professional growth within the hospitality industry, demonstrating how passion and dedication can lead to remarkable achievements.
