One of the most significant heritage homes in Arrowtown has been listed for sale. The property, located at the corner of Anglesea and Merioneth Streets, is a category 2 historic home originally built in 1878 for Arrowtown’s first magistrate. It later served as a residence for Catholic nuns for approximately 30 years.

The home has undergone several renovations, including the addition of two bedrooms in the early 1900s. The current owners, who acquired the property in the mid-2000s, worked with renowned Queenstown architect Michael Wyatt to restore and extend the building while maintaining its historical integrity.

According to Tracey Laker, an agent with Bayleys Arrowtown, the vendors dedicated significant effort to preserving original features during the restoration. Many of the interior schist walls, previously covered in plaster, were meticulously chipped back to reveal the authentic stone beneath.

The recent extension also includes an outbuilding believed to originate from the former goldmining settlement of Macetown, which has been transformed into a bunk room, adding to the property’s charm.

In addition to its architectural features, the home boasts established gardens and mature fruit trees, enhancing its appeal for potential buyers. Laker, along with her colleague Todd Weeks, is marketing the property, highlighting its historical significance and well-preserved features.

As interest in heritage properties continues to rise, this Arrowtown cottage presents a unique opportunity for buyers seeking a blend of history and modern comfort. The combination of its storied past and thoughtful renovations makes it a noteworthy listing in the region’s real estate market.
