Maria Wickens has garnered significant attention in the literary community after securing second place in the prestigious Sargeson Prize with her compelling work, “My Pal Mal.” The annual prize, judged this year by acclaimed author Elizabeth Knox, showcases emerging voices in literature and celebrates outstanding storytelling.

Wickens’ piece, described as “strange and funny and poetic,” captivated Knox during the judging process. The author expressed her initial surprise, stating, “When I began reading it for the first time, I was, for a number of paragraphs, a bit bewildered… Then I thought ‘jeepers!’ and ‘wow!’ and the hair went up on the back of my neck.” Knox’s remarks highlight the unique blend of humor and depth in Wickens’ writing, which has resonated with readers and critics alike.

The Sargeson Prize, supported by the University of Waikato, awards a total of $15,000 for the top entry in its Open Division. This year, the first prize was claimed by Becky Manawatu for her story titled “The Vase.” The competition also recognizes young talent, with Brooke Smith, a Year 13 student from Waiuku College, winning $2,000 in the secondary schools division for her entry, “Piece of the Furniture.” Smith’s story received glowing feedback, with one reader, Margaret Mills, praising her “sensitivity and lyricism way beyond your years.”

The Sargeson Prize continues to elevate voices in literature, as seen through the recognition of other talented writers. Kate Duignan, whose work “Orange Warning” placed third in the Open Division, is set to be featured next week. According to Steve Braunias, the literary editor at ReadingRoom, Duignan’s piece is considered his personal favorite of the entries.

Wickens’ journey in the literary world reflects a growing trend of writers exploring complex themes with a mix of lightness and depth. Her success in the Sargeson Prize serves as an inspiration for both established and emerging authors, highlighting the importance of creativity and originality in storytelling.

As the literary landscape evolves, competitions like the Sargeson Prize play a crucial role in discovering and nurturing new talent. Wickens’ achievement not only underscores her potential as a writer but also reinforces the significance of platforms that champion diverse voices in literature.
