New Zealand Architects Honored with 2025 National Awards
The winners of the 2025 Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects awards have been announced, celebrating exceptional architectural achievements across the country. The awards ceremony, held on March 15, 2025, at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, recognized various projects ranging from innovative public facilities to significant heritage renovations.
Among the notable winners are the architects behind the changing sheds at a new swimming venue located along the Auckland waterfront. This venue aims to enhance recreational opportunities in the area. Additionally, awards were presented for a waterfront apartment development at Hobsonville Point and the University of Auckland’s newly constructed Hiwa sports centre, showcasing the versatility and creativity of New Zealand architects.
In total, the institute awarded 29 accolades across 11 categories, highlighting both large-scale developments and smaller, community-focused projects. The broad spectrum of awarded designs underscores the diversity of architectural talent in New Zealand.
Heritage Projects Receive Recognition
The heritage category saw significant entries, with several projects earning high praise. A major renovation of the Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui, designed by Warren and Mahoney Architects, was honored for its thoughtful restoration and modern enhancements. This project aims to preserve the gallery’s cultural significance while providing an updated space for exhibitions.
Additionally, the reconstruction of a pātaka kai, a traditional Māori food storage structure, by Dalgleish Architects was recognized for its commitment to cultural heritage. This project reflects a growing trend towards incorporating indigenous design principles in contemporary architecture.
Another highlight was the renewal of the Chapel of the Upper Room in Christchurch, undertaken by Wilkie + Bruce Registered Architects. This landmark project not only revitalizes a key space in the community but also pays homage to its historical context, making it a focal point for reflection and gathering.
The awards serve as a platform to showcase the vital role architecture plays in shaping communities and preserving cultural identity. The New Zealand Institute of Architects continues to champion excellence and innovation in the field, with this year’s winners exemplifying the rich architectural landscape of the nation.
