Queen Alexandra Passes Away, Leaving a Nation in Mourning
Queen Alexandra, the beloved Queen Mother and widow of King Edward VII, passed away peacefully on November 23, 1925, at the age of 80. Her death was confirmed in a bulletin issued from Sandringham, where it was noted that there had been no change in her critical condition prior to her passing. The announcement stated, “Queen Alexandra is sinking rapidly,” shortly before she died at 17:20, surrounded by her family.
Royal Family’s Heartfelt Loss
The Prince of Wales and the Duke of York arrived at the railway station just minutes too late, reaching the dimly lit platform only 16 minutes after the Queen Mother’s death. Their arrival coincided tragically with the news of her passing, which was conveyed to them by the stationmaster. The two princes bowed their heads in silent acknowledgment of their loss before departing in a waiting car.
In a message of condolence, the Governor-General of New Zealand, Fergusson, expressed profound grief on behalf of the Government and the people of New Zealand, stating, “New Zealand joins with the whole Empire in mourning for one so greatly beloved.” This sentiment reflects the deep affection felt across the Commonwealth for Queen Alexandra, whose presence in public life spanned over six decades.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Born on December 1, 1844, Queen Alexandra was the eldest daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark. Although she retained her Danish heritage, her role in British society endeared her to the public, making her a cherished figure in the nation. Following the death of her husband in 1910, she stepped back from her public duties but remained a beloved elder of the royal family.
Her contributions to the nation were remembered fondly by many. Queen Alexandra was known for her warmth, genuine interest in others, and a sense of duty that resonated with the people. She was more than just a royal figure; she was a symbol of compassion and grace. The qualities she embodied throughout her life, including tact, affection, and devotion to the public, endeared her to many.
Following the announcement of her death, flags across the nation were flown at half-mast in tribute. The directors of a prominent exhibition convened immediately to acknowledge her passing, deciding to cancel scheduled performances out of respect. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ band refrained from playing, underscoring the gravity of the moment for a nation in mourning.
The loss of Queen Alexandra marks the end of an era for the British royal family. Her legacy, characterized by deep affection for her country and its people, will continue to be felt by generations to come. As the nation reflects on her life, many will remember the personal virtues that made her an integral part of the British heart.
