Auckland FC Aims for Record Goals with May’s Confidence
Auckland FC forward Guillermo May is determined to improve the team’s scoring record as they head into the fifth round of the A-League. Despite not having scored yet this season, May believes Auckland will surpass their impressive tally of 50 goals from the previous campaign. Last season, he marked his first goal in round five and went on to become the club’s leading scorer with nine goals.
After three starts and one substitute appearance this season, May acknowledges some “anxiety” about his current scoring drought. He is focused on refining his accuracy, stating, “I need to train the precision a little more.” However, he remains committed to supporting the team, saying, “If the team wins and I don’t score, I prefer to be on a winning team than be the scoring man.”
Building on Last Season’s Success
Auckland FC achieved a remarkable feat last season by becoming the fastest club in 20 years of A-League history to score 50 goals. May points to recent signings, including Sam Cosgrove and Lachlan Brook, as crucial additions that will enhance the team’s attacking prowess this season. “We are playing with the ball better than last season, and that is helping us to create better chances. It’s easier this year for us to score than before. I think we’re going to score more goals this year,” he stated.
At 27, May is returning from an injury but remains optimistic about his performance. He is working diligently to regain his fitness and rhythm, saying, “I’m getting back to the pace, the rhythm, the fitness.” He sets high standards for himself, aiming to improve his contributions on the field. “In my role, I’m trying to assist and create good chances. I push every day to be better, and I want to upgrade my stats.”
Competitive Landscape Ahead
The current season has seen an increase in competitiveness across the league, with more teams vying for a top-six playoff spot. Auckland FC currently tops the A-League table, a position they held for much of last season. May is aware that maintaining this lead requires consistent effort. “It’s been a good start for us because the four teams we’ve faced are going to be competitive and they’re going to be on top if they keep doing what they are doing,” he commented.
As Auckland FC prepares to host fourth-placed Brisbane Roar on Sunday, May looks forward to the opportunity to add to his scoring tally. He is determined to rise to the challenge, saying, “I’m going to be better; I’m trying to be.”
