India Triumphs Over White Ferns in World Cup Warm-Up Match
The White Ferns of New Zealand faced a disappointing defeat against India in their second warm-up match ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup, falling short by four wickets in Bengaluru. In a contest shortened to 42 overs due to rain, New Zealand batted first and managed to score 232 runs for the loss of eight wickets.
Captain Sophie Devine played a pivotal role in the innings, contributing a solid 54 runs. She was supported by Amelia Kerr, who added 40 runs, and Maddy Green, who remained unbeaten on 49. The Indian bowling attack was led by left-arm spinner Shree Charani, who was effective throughout the match, finishing with three wickets to her name.
India’s batting response was marked by confidence as Harleen Deol and captain Harmanpreet Kaur set the pace for the chase. Deol retired with 74 runs, while Kaur added 69 runs, steering the team towards its target. Despite a brief collapse that saw India lose four wickets in rapid succession, the hosts successfully reached their target with eight balls to spare. Bree Illing claimed two wickets for New Zealand, alongside Jess Kerr, who also took two wickets, but it was not enough to secure a victory.
After the match, Maddy Green reflected on the team’s performance, stating, “Disappointing not to get over the line, but the encouraging thing is we’re seeing some really good signs from the squad. Sophie batted brilliantly, and Breezy’s spell was excellent. We’re looking forward to our first game against Australia.” This match follows New Zealand’s earlier defeat to India A in their first warm-up fixture.
As New Zealand prepares for their World Cup opener against Australia in Indore on March 15, 2024, the team will look to build on the positives from this match and improve their performance ahead of the tournament. The White Ferns will be hoping to turn their fortunes around as they enter the highly anticipated World Cup stage.
