Jesse Ryder to Return in Thrilling T20 Black Clash Showdown
Former New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder is set to make an exciting return to the pitch during the upcoming T20 Black Clash on January 17, 2026, at Tauranga’s Bay Oval. After stepping away from the international cricket scene, Ryder will join Daniel Vettori‘s Team Cricket as they take on Kieran Read‘s Team Rugby in a highly anticipated match that promises to deliver both entertainment and competition.
Ryder, a left-handed batsman renowned for his explosive playing style, previously made headlines for his remarkable achievements, including scoring all three of his Test centuries against India. Known as one of New Zealand sport’s more colorful figures, he expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event. “The Black Clash looks like awesome fun, so that’s definitely a bit of me,” Ryder said. “I can’t wait to get out there. I reckon I’ve still got a bit to offer!”
In addition to his Test successes, Ryder’s prowess in shorter formats is noteworthy. In 2014, he achieved the ninth-fastest ODI century in history, smashing 104 runs off just 46 balls during a rain-affected match against the West Indies in Queenstown. Reflecting on Ryder’s impact, captain Daniel Vettori remarked, “On his day, Jesse was without doubt one of the most destructive batters the game has seen. It’s going to be great catching up with him again. I’m sure he’ll be going all out to put on a show for the fans.”
At the age of 41, Ryder’s most recent professional appearance was in 2023, where he participated in a T20 legends series for the Southern Superstars. Carlena Limmer, the event director, expressed her excitement about Ryder’s involvement in the 2026 Black Clash. “The T20 Black Clash is all about having a great time and celebrating Kiwi sport’s finest athletes and biggest personalities,” Limmer stated. “Jesse certainly ticks all the boxes—I’d say he’s the ultimate Black Clash player. I know the fans will all get behind him and hope he produces some of his trademark massive hits.”
Ryder’s inclusion further strengthens an already impressive Team Cricket lineup, which features stars such as Tim Southee and Neil Wagner, adding world-class pace bowling to the mix. In response, Read’s competitive Team Rugby has recruited Australian cricket legend Michael Hussey as a wildcard player, alongside a roster of rugby athletes with exceptional cricketing skills.
This year’s event marks the third edition of the Black Clash hosted at Tauranga. The previous two matches in 2022 and 2024 sold out quickly, attracting sports enthusiasts from across the country to the picturesque Bay Oval.
Confirmed players for the upcoming match include:
Team Cricket: Daniel Vettori (Captain), Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Hamish Marshall, Kyle Mills, Nathan McCullum, Jesse Ryder.
Team Rugby: Kieran Read (Captain), Michael Hussey (Wildcard), Ruben Love, Joey Wheeler, Andy Ellis, Jason Spice, Kaylum Boshier.
As the date approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a thrilling clash between cricket and rugby legends, showcasing athleticism and camaraderie in a unique sporting event. Fans eagerly await the spectacle, hoping to witness Ryder’s return to form and the intense competition that lies ahead.
