Silver Ferns Claim Taini Jamison Trophy with Win Over South Africa
The Silver Ferns secured the Taini Jamison Trophy by defeating South Africa 70-58 in the second Test match held in Napier on October 21, 2023. This victory followed a commanding win in the first Test, where New Zealand triumphed by 26 goals in Auckland.
The match began with South Africa taking an early lead of 12-6, showing impressive form in the first quarter, which they won 15-14. The Silver Ferns struggled initially to find their rhythm in attack. However, shooter Grace Nweke urged her teammates to adjust their approach and deliver the ball more effectively to her.
As the game progressed, New Zealand began to connect better on the court. They responded with a solid second quarter, outscoring South Africa 20-13 and leading 34-28 at halftime. The third quarter turned into a competitive exchange, with both teams trading goals. Yet, New Zealand managed to assert themselves in the final moments of the quarter, finishing with a 53-42 advantage heading into the last period.
In a notable moment for the Silver Ferns, Filda Vui made her debut, stepping in as goal attack midway through the final quarter. Nweke’s performance was particularly remarkable, as she scored an impressive total of 60 goals throughout the match. Stand-in captain Kelly Jackson also contributed significantly, securing several intercepts that bolstered New Zealand’s defense.
With this victory, the Silver Ferns not only claimed the trophy but also demonstrated their resilience and skill on the court. Fans and analysts alike can follow the latest updates and reactions through RNZ’s live blog.
