Smith and Holt Propel NEV to Victory Over Green Island
The North East Valley (NEV) cricket team claimed victory over Green Island with a decisive performance at Sunnyvale on Saturday. Utilizing the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method due to rain interruptions, NEV achieved a target of 128 runs, finishing at 127 for 3.
Jeremy Smith and Gus Holt were instrumental in the win, combining to take seven wickets for NEV. Smith delivered a standout performance, claiming four wickets for 26 runs, while Holt supported with three for 27 in his ten overs. Despite a solid second-wicket partnership of 52 runs between Mayank Malhotra (30) and Elliot Santner (39), Green Island struggled with their middle order, ultimately posting a total of 181 runs. Regan Cairns (33) and Hamish Wilson (24) added a late 51-run stand for the eighth wicket, helping to set a challenging target.
NEV’s chase began strong, with Hunter Kindley remaining unbeaten on 51 after forming an 84-run partnership with Sebastian Lauderdale-Smith, who contributed 49 runs. Despite some setbacks, including a stumping by Brad Kneebone and two wickets taken by Wilson, NEV was ahead on the DLS calculation when rain halted play, securing their win.
In another match, Otago’s left-arm bowler Thomas O’Connor played a pivotal role in CDK’s eight-wicket victory against University-Grange at Tonga Park. O’Connor dismissed both opening batsmen early and returned to clean up one of the tailenders, finishing with figures of three wickets for 26 runs. His brother, Jack O’Connor, also contributed with one wicket for 10 runs, helping to restrict University-Grange to a total of 141 runs.
O’Connor’s batting performance further highlighted his talent as he scored an impressive 76 not out, hitting five sixes and eight fours. Earlier in the week, he faced the New Zealand XI against the touring West Indies, where he was controversially given out lbw for 35 runs.
Another noteworthy match saw Albion bounce back from their first loss of the season, defeating Taieri with a commanding score of 246 for 9 at Brooklands Park. Openers Dylan Fletcher and Quinn Sunde set a strong foundation with a 105-run partnership. Fletcher made a brisk 44 runs, while Sunde, who has experience in first-class cricket, contributed 74 runs from 86 balls.
Though Taieri’s Toby Hart took three wickets for 38 runs, they fell short in their chase. Zac Cumming scored 50 runs from 61 balls, but with the rain affecting play, Taieri was left at 129 for 6 when the match concluded, leading to another victory for Albion.
These matches underscore the competitive spirit and talent present in the league, with players like Smith, Holt, and O’Connor showcasing their skills on the field. As the season progresses, teams will look to build on these performances in upcoming fixtures.
