Man Sets Fire to Police Station, Calls Authorities to Confess
A 32-year-old man has been arrested after he set fire to the front entrance of the Dunedin Central Police Station early this morning. The incident occurred at approximately 04:40, when the accused used petrol as an accelerant to ignite the locked entrance. Following the act, he filmed the scene from across the road and subsequently contacted police to inform them of his actions.
According to Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, the man’s reasoning for the incident was straightforward: “His explanation is he wants to go back to prison.” This unusual motive has drawn attention, highlighting a troubling aspect of the case. The man is scheduled to appear in the Dunedin District Court later today, where he will face charges of wilful damage and arson.
The fire was promptly extinguished by police staff, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, significant damage was evident, with carpet and tiles at the entrance singed and a strong smell of petrol lingering in the air. Snr Sgt Bond noted that the situation could have been far more dangerous, as there was potential for injuries to both police staff and any individuals held within the station.
“Particularly when you’re pouring petrol as well, anywhere, let alone the possible self-inflicted injuries with pouring petrol and getting it on your hands or shoes and setting yourself alight too,” he explained. The act of setting fire to a police station is rare, according to Bond, who expressed concern over the escalation of frustrations that lead to such dangerous behavior.
“This was fire rather than people being frustrated and kicking a window when departing sort of thing,” he stated. The authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly focusing on the individual’s mental state and motivations.
As the investigation unfolds, the incident raises questions about the underlying issues that may lead individuals to resort to such drastic measures. The police are urging the community to report any similar behaviors and to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling.
