New Tool nProve Transforms Ram Selection for Farmers
Farmers in New Zealand now have access to a new tool, nProve, developed by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ), which aims to simplify the process of selecting rams based on genetic traits. This innovative platform allows farmers to make more profitable breeding decisions by leveraging genetic information.
The creation of nProve involved insights from farmers, breeders, and rural professionals, all focused on enhancing the breeding process. Sarah Powdrell, Genetics Extension and Operations Manager at B+LNZ, likened the process of ram selection to purchasing a car. “Most cars share similar features, but people still have preferences,” Powdrell explained. “Rams are no different. While they may look similar, their genetic makeup can vary significantly.”
Much like cars in New Zealand that come with safety test ratings, nProve offers farmers a way to objectively compare rams using genetic indexes and breeding values. These metrics provide insights that extend beyond mere visual assessment, allowing for a more informed decision-making process.
Empowering Farmers with Data-Driven Decisions
nProve presents genetic information in a user-friendly format, enabling farmers to make objective comparisons. “Eye appraisal alone doesn’t cut the mustard compared to ratings based on comprehensive data on an animal and its family members,” Powdrell noted. “There needs to be a balance, and that’s where nProve comes in.”
The tool features a series of sliders and filters that allow users to prioritize traits important to their breeding goals. For instance, if resistance to facial eczema or parasites is a priority, farmers can adjust the sliders to identify the top flocks exhibiting those traits. This functionality addresses the increasing complexity farmers face when selecting rams, especially with the introduction of new traits as scientific understanding evolves.
Powdrell emphasized the importance of simplifying the ram selection process. “We’re often told by farmers that ram buying is getting more complicated,” she said. “That’s why we built nProve — to simplify the process and empower farmers to have more effective conversations with their ram breeders.”
Streamlined Access to Breeding Resources
Farmers are encouraged to explore the nProve tool ahead of their ram purchases. Available at nprove.nz, the platform allows users to filter their options by region, breed, and birth year. Additionally, farmers can flag breeders of interest and create a shortlist for easy reference.
Breeders also welcome the opportunity to engage with farmers about their breeding philosophy and the data that supports the value of their rams. The introduction of tools like nProve is intended to ensure that rams are matched with the right farmers, ultimately leading to better outcomes for both parties.
Getting started with nProve is straightforward. Interested individuals can simply visit nprove.nz. For additional resources related to ram buying, farmers can visit beeflambnz.com and search for “sheep genetics.”
The launch of nProve signifies a notable advancement in the agricultural sector, reinforcing the importance of data-driven decisions in breeding practices. With the support of B+LNZ, farmers now have a powerful tool that aligns with their specific needs, enhancing their ability to make informed choices in the evolving landscape of sheep genetics.
