UPSC Topper Resigns Amid Delhi’s Air Quality Crisis
As air quality in Delhi deteriorated to hazardous levels, a significant resignation has sparked a nationwide conversation about the city’s pollution crisis. On November 8, 2023, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) soared above 400 in several areas, prompting Akshat Shrivastava, an entrepreneur and founder of Wisdom Hatch, to announce that his wife, an officer in the Indian Economic Service (IES), resigned from her position. She had secured the prestigious All India Rank 8 in the UPSC examination.
The couple cited the alarming air pollution levels and the potential health risks to their young son as the primary motivations for this pivotal decision. In a heartfelt post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Shrivastava expressed his thoughts, stating, “My wife got UPSC Rank 8th. She was a Group A service officer (Indian Economic Service). For most of her career, she would be in Delhi. Looking at the pollution situation, and our young son, she decided to quit.” This decision, characterized as “difficult but necessary,” has struck a chord with many, as he shared that they feel “absolutely no regrets.”
The outpouring of support on social media reflects a growing frustration among residents regarding the persistent smog enveloping the capital. Many users resonated with the couple’s plight, describing the resignation as a sobering reality check. Others, however, highlighted the privilege involved in being able to relocate or resign from a job due to environmental concerns—an option not available to everyone.
Health Risks Linked to Poor Air Quality
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned about the severe health implications of Delhi’s toxic air. The pollution levels often remain in the “very poor” or “severe” categories, which poses significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Prolonged exposure to such air quality can lead to serious complications including asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and diminished lung function, as noted by Business Today.
On the same day as Shrivastava’s announcement, Delhi’s AQI was recorded at an alarming average of 361 at 4 PM, categorizing it as “very poor” and affirming its status as the second most polluted city in India that day, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Rising Discontent and Calls for Action
The resignation has reignited discussions surrounding personal responsibility and government accountability in addressing the pollution crisis. As the air quality continues to plummet, many citizens echo Shrivastava’s sentiments about the apparent lack of effective governmental action. “None of the governments give a shit. Citizens are mostly brainwashed. And the onus is on you to save yourself,” he stated, urging individuals to take personal action to protect their families.
As Delhi grapples with its annual pollution crisis, the human toll becomes increasingly evident. The decision made by Shrivastava’s wife serves as a poignant example of the drastic steps some individuals are willing to take in response to the city’s deteriorating environment. While the couple’s choice may resonate widely, it also underscores the stark realities faced by countless residents who remain exposed to the dangers of toxic air without feasible alternatives.
As the dialogue around this critical issue escalates, the impact of pollution on daily life in Delhi continues to choke not only the air but also the overall quality of life for its citizens. The urgency for effective solutions is more pressing than ever, as residents seek ways to navigate the challenges posed by their environment.
