Cyclist Injured During Taupō Enduro After Collision with Ute
An experienced cyclist from Pāpāmoa, Tod Penberthy, sustained serious injuries after being struck by the wing mirror of a utility vehicle during the Taupō Enduro, a long-distance cycling event in New Zealand. The incident occurred on March 30, 2024, as he was competing in the challenging 322-kilometre race, which involves two laps around the scenic Lake Taupō.
Penberthy had already completed approximately 200 kilometres of the race when the collision took place on Poihipi Rd. He estimated that the ute was travelling at a speed of 80 to 90 kilometres per hour when it struck him. Following the accident, he was transported to Taupō Hospital by ambulance and subsequently airlifted to Tauranga Hospital via rescue helicopter due to the severity of his injuries.
In an emotional recounting of the event, the 67-year-old cyclist shared, “I couldn’t speak, I was in agony.” Penberthy was left with multiple injuries, including road rash, six broken ribs, and a deep laceration down his right arm that extended through the muscle and to the bone.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of cyclists on New Zealand’s roads, particularly during large-scale events like the Taupō Enduro. Many participants and spectators are now advocating for increased measures to protect cyclists from vehicular traffic during such events.
The Taupō Enduro is known for attracting hundreds of cyclists from various regions, making it a significant event in the cycling calendar. Organizers are expected to review safety protocols to ensure the well-being of participants in future races.
As Penberthy recovers from his injuries, the cycling community has rallied around him, expressing support and solidarity. His experience serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers cyclists face on the road, prompting calls for greater awareness and respect for all road users.
This incident not only highlights the risks associated with competitive cycling but also emphasizes the need for ongoing dialogue about road safety measures to protect vulnerable road users.
