Fiji Sevens Teams Advance to Dubai 7s Semi-Finals After Strong Showings
The Fiji sevens rugby teams have successfully qualified for the semi-finals of the Dubai 7s tournament, set to take place on Sunday night. Both the men’s and women’s teams achieved two victories in pool play, securing their spots in the final four of this season’s opening event of the 2025/2026 HSBC Sevens Series.
In the men’s competition, Fiji faced Argentina and South Africa in their initial pool matches, recording impressive victories. They began with a 26-19 win against Argentina, followed by a decisive 28-10 victory over South Africa. However, their momentum was halted in their final pool game against France, where they lost 24-19. Despite this setback, the Fijian men’s team still advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face New Zealand.
The Fijiana 7s team also demonstrated strong performance in the women’s competition. They opened their Dubai campaign with a 19-7 victory over the United States. This was followed by a notable win against France, where Reapi Uluinasau scored three tries, leading the team to a 28-19 triumph. Unfortunately, the Fijiana team could not maintain their winning streak, falling to New Zealand 31-12 in their final pool match. They will now compete against Australia in the semi-finals.
New Tournament Format and Final Matches
The Dubai 7s tournament introduces a new format featuring only the top eight teams, eliminating quarter-finals. In this structure, the top two teams from each pool in both the men’s and women’s competitions advance directly to the semi-finals. The men’s semi-finals will see Fiji take on New Zealand, while France will compete against Australia. In the women’s tournament, Fiji faces Australia, and New Zealand will go up against Japan.
The finals are scheduled for Monday morning, New Zealand time. Notably, both the Fijian men’s team and the Australian women’s team enter this event as the defending champions of the Dubai 7s. In the previous season, Argentina and New Zealand were the overall winners of the HSBC Sevens Series in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
As the teams prepare for the semi-finals, rugby fans eagerly anticipate thrilling matchups that are sure to showcase the skill and determination of these elite athletes.
