A group of friends recently enjoyed a remarkable encounter with a humpback whale off the coast of Northland’s Bream Bay. Their thrilling sighting occurred on Sunday while returning from a fishing trip near the Hen and Chicken Islands. The experience marked a first for Michele Adams, who has frequented the Bream Bay area for more than 40 years.

The friends, who were aboard a 7m boat, spotted the water turning white, indicating the presence of the whale. As they reeled in their fishing lines and approached the spectacle, the whale surfaced approximately 50 meters from their boat. In a stunning display, it leapt out of the water, showcasing its massive size. “He was enormous, at least twice the size of the boat,” Adams recalled.

Hope for Future Sightings

Adams expressed her hope that humpback whales will continue to visit the region. While she has encountered dolphins and smaller whale species during her decades of visits, this sighting stands out as a highlight. The sighting not only delighted the group but also serves as a reminder of the rich marine life that inhabits the waters off New Zealand’s coast.

Local fishers and marine enthusiasts in the area are encouraged by such encounters, as they highlight the ecological importance of Bream Bay and its surrounding waters. The presence of humpback whales is a positive indicator of the health of marine ecosystems, which can attract more visitors and boost local tourism.

As the group reminisced about their extraordinary day, they acknowledged the thrill of connecting with nature in such a dramatic way. The sighting has sparked conversations among local communities about the importance of marine conservation, ensuring that future generations can also experience the wonder of these majestic creatures.

Such encounters contribute significantly to the appreciation of New Zealand’s unique marine environment, inspiring both locals and tourists alike to respect and protect these vital ecosystems.
