Marlborough Pub Assault: Louie Buskin Avoids Jail for Attack
A young man has been spared a jail sentence following an assault at a pub in Marlborough that resulted in severe injuries to the victim. Louie Buskin, aged 23, appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Thursday, where he received a nine-month prison sentence, which has been deferred for 60 days. The incident occurred in August 2022 and left the victim with a fractured skull, a brain bleed, and permanent hearing loss.
In court, Buskin pleaded guilty to two charges stemming from the attack. The first charge was for injuring by unlawful act, which carries a maximum penalty of three months’ imprisonment. The second charge was for disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence, also with a maximum penalty of three months.
Judge David Robinson addressed the severity of the victim’s injuries during the sentencing. Though the lead charge does not allege intent to injure, the consequences were dire. The victim now faces extensive medical challenges, including the need for a cochlear implant surgery scheduled for February 2026.
The decision to defer the sentence allows Buskin time to reflect on the gravity of his actions. The judge emphasized that such violent behaviour cannot be tolerated in society, highlighting the need for accountability.
The Marlborough community remains shocked by the incident, as it underscores issues surrounding public safety in social settings. Local authorities have called for a review of security measures in pubs and bars to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As the case concludes, the victim’s road to recovery is just beginning. With the medical procedures ahead, the long-term impact of this incident will be felt not only by him but also by his family and friends. The court’s decision serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of violence and the lasting effects it can have on individuals and communities.
