Te Puke Driver Delivers 1,100 School Lunches Daily Across Bay of Plenty

Nic Te Kotahi undertakes a remarkable journey each day, driving over 340 kilometers to deliver lunches to schools throughout the Bay of Plenty. His mission, part of the School Lunch Collective, involves serving children from Tōrere to Mamaku and ensures that approximately 1,100 lunches reach twelve schools in the Tauranga region daily.
Te Kotahi begins his day in the early hours, often around 4 a.m., at the production kitchen located in Mount Maunganui. There, he meticulously packs meals into insulated bins before loading them onto his truck. This preparation is crucial, as it guarantees the meals remain fresh and ready for the students by lunchtime.
Once on the road, Te Kotahi navigates various routes, making stops at each school to deliver the meals. His presence has become a familiar sight at school gates, where he is greeted warmly by both staff and students. The impact of his work extends beyond just food delivery; it fosters a sense of community and support for families in the region.
After completing his deliveries, Te Kotahi returns to the kitchen to clean his truck and prepare for the following day’s tasks. His dedication to this role exemplifies a commitment to nourishing children and supporting local education initiatives.
The School Lunch Collective, which employs Te Kotahi and his fellow drivers, plays a vital role in addressing food insecurity among school-aged children in New Zealand. This program not only provides nutritious meals but also promotes healthy eating habits and ensures that students are ready to learn.
As the demand for school lunches continues to grow, Te Kotahi’s role becomes increasingly important. His daily mission highlights the need for sustainable solutions to feed children and contributes to the broader conversation about food accessibility in schools. Through his efforts, Te Kotahi embodies the spirit of community support, making a lasting difference in the lives of many families across the Bay of Plenty.
