Wellington’s New Mayor Andrew Little Reveals Wealthy Backers
The financial supporters of Wellington’s newly elected mayor, Andrew Little, have been disclosed, highlighting contributions from some of the city’s most affluent figures. Electoral returns, made public on March 15, 2024, indicate that Little’s successful campaign was significantly funded by a range of former politicians and influential business leaders, as well as various unions from across New Zealand.
Little’s campaign received notable contributions, including $2,000 from former National Party minister Chris Finlayson and $2,500 from Dame Annette King, a former Labour Party minister and diplomat. Additionally, multimillionaire property developer Ian Cassels, associated with the Wellington Company, contributed $5,000 to the campaign. Former city councillor and art patron Chris Parkin also supported Little with a donation of $2,500. This financial backing illustrates the broad network of support that helped propel Little into the mayoral position.
In contrast, the electoral officer has raised questions regarding the funding disclosures of Ray Chung, a candidate who did not secure a victory in the mayoral race. Chung’s campaign group, Independent Together, is currently under scrutiny for its methods of grouping and reporting donor contributions. The electoral officer’s inquiry aims to ensure transparency and compliance with electoral funding regulations.
As the new administration takes shape, the financial affiliations of Little and the challenges faced by Chung’s campaign highlight the complexities of political financing within local governance. The implications of these financial relationships may shape the policies and initiatives of the newly elected officials in Wellington, as they navigate the interests of their supporters while addressing the needs of their constituents.
