The death of a New Zealand tourist, Karla Anne Drescher, in Phuket has raised questions from her family about the circumstances surrounding her passing. The 47-year-old was found unresponsive in her hotel bed near Kata Beach on Monday, October 23, 2023. Local reports indicate that there were no visible signs of injury or struggle when her body was discovered by a 49-year-old German man who identified himself as a friend.
Her son, Travis Deveraux, 21, expressed his concerns in an interview with the NT News in Australia. He mentioned that the two maintained frequent communication, typically exchanging messages multiple times a day. When he did not receive a response from his mother, he immediately sensed something was wrong.
According to the Phuket News, Thai police have stated that the investigation into Drescher’s death is ongoing, but no foul play is currently suspected. The local authorities are awaiting the results of a forensic examination, which may provide further insights into the cause of death.
Deveraux indicated that he believes there is more to the story than what has been reported. He described his mother as a vibrant person who was enjoying her holiday in Thailand. The family is eager for answers, especially as they navigate this unexpected tragedy from afar.
In response to the situation, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed that they are providing assistance to the family during this difficult time. The ministry has also urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward to assist Thai authorities.
As the investigation continues, Deveraux remains hopeful for clarity regarding his mother’s untimely death. He has expressed a desire to understand what truly happened in those final moments of her life. The family is seeking closure, wanting to honor Drescher’s memory in a manner befitting her spirit and love for adventure.
