Local Community Champions Nominated for Silver Fern Farms Award

Local residents Kirsty Elers and Jen McDonald have received nominations for the prestigious Silver Fern Farms lamb roast, acknowledging their significant contributions to the community of Kaitangata. Recognized as “the unsung heroes and heart and soul of Kai,” both women have worked tirelessly to support local clubs through donations and fundraisers, while also providing essential support to those in need.
The nominations highlight their commitment to the community, with Elers stating, “It’s nice to be in a position to help.” This sentiment reflects the spirit of the Crescent Bar and Grill, where both women have made a lasting impact. The establishment, located on the riverside, has served the community for approximately 50 years and has become a social hub under McDonald’s leadership.
Community-Centric Leadership
Jen McDonald took over ownership and management of the Crescent Bar and Grill eight years ago, renaming it to The Crescent. As the chef and bartender, she describes the venue as “a bit like being the living room of the community,” where residents feel comfortable dropping in for a chat or a meal. The bar’s ambiance fosters a sense of belonging, making it a cornerstone of local social life.
As the festive season approaches, McDonald shared plans to close the bar for Christmas, with a possibility of sharing the lamb roast during the holiday period. This gesture further exemplifies the dedication she and Elers have towards fostering community spirit.
Nominations for the Silver Fern Farms lamb roast are still open. Community members are encouraged to submit the names, phone numbers, and reasons for their nominations to [email protected]. This initiative aims to celebrate individuals who exemplify community values and support those around them.
The nominations for Kirsty Elers and Jen McDonald shed light on the importance of grassroots contributions to community life. Their efforts not only uplift local organizations but also strengthen the social fabric of Kaitangata, demonstrating how individual actions can create a ripple effect of kindness and support.
