Jo Cribb Highlights Best Wines of 2025 with Unique Choices
As 2025 draws to a close, wine enthusiast Jo Cribb has shared her top wine selections, offering a glimpse into the best tipples of the year. Following a season of festive gatherings and year-end celebrations, Cribb’s insights provide a delightful round-up of wines that stand out for various reasons. This year’s highlights cover unique innovations, personal preferences, and the underrated gems of the wine world.
Innovative Choices and Notable Mentions
Cribb awarded the title for best innovation in wine to the spritz, a refreshing blend that combines prosecco with soda water, garnished with fresh herbs. She envisions herself enjoying this drink while relaxing with a book in January. This innovation reflects a growing trend in summer beverages that prioritize lightness and flavor.
On a less favorable note, Cribb identified zero-alcohol wine as the most disappointing choice of the year, humorously admitting to pouring it down the sink. She advocates for a more enjoyable low-alcohol experience by suggesting that mixing full-strength sauvignon blanc with soda water or adding ice cubes to rosé provides a better alternative. For those who prefer completely alcohol-free options, Cribb recommends opting for beer instead.
In her exploration of sparkling wines, Cribb highlighted New Zealand’s offerings, particularly those made using the méthode traditionnelle. She praises these wines for their quality, noting that they often rival their French counterparts at a fraction of the price.
Top Reds and Seasonal Favorites
Among the reds, Cribb declared a tie for the most luscious varietals between the robust Martinborough pinot noir and the elegant Hawke’s Bay syrah. Both wines exemplify the rich flavors and smooth textures that make them perfect for summer barbecues and gatherings.
As the year concludes, Cribb also recommends specific selections for those looking to explore New Zealand wines. The Spritzzetto, a premium Italian-style spritz priced at $24 for a pack of four 250 ml cans, is a convenient choice for summer enjoyment. Created by two New Zealanders inspired by their experiences in Venice, this spritz combines premium wine, Italian aperitif, and sparkling water.
For a more classic experience, she suggests the Oak Estate Syrah 2023 from Hawke’s Bay, priced at $34. This wine tantalizes with flavors of juicy red and black berries, complemented by a smooth mouthfeel that pairs beautifully with grilled meats.
Finally, the Alexia Méthode Traditionelle Rosé from Wairarapa, priced at $42, captures attention with its crispness and vibrant notes of strawberry and citrus, making it a delightful choice for festive occasions.
As we look forward to 2026, Cribb’s recommendations serve as a guide for those eager to explore new wines and rediscover old favorites. Happy sipping!
