West Indies Rally Strongly in Response to New Zealand’s 575
The West Indies made a commendable start in their daunting chase against New Zealand, finishing the second day of the Test match at Mount Maunganui with a score of 110 runs without loss. This performance came after New Zealand declared their first innings at a formidable total of 575 runs for 8 wickets.
New Zealand’s Dominant First Innings
New Zealand continued their dominance over the West Indies bowling attack from the first day. The home side began the day with a strong position at 334 runs for 1 wicket. Jacob Duffy, who came in as nightwatchman, was the first wicket to fall for 17 runs, dismissed by Jayden Seales, allowing captain Kane Williamson to finally take his place at the crease after a wait of 93 overs.
Devon Conway achieved a remarkable milestone, scoring his second Test double-century, amassing 227 runs from 318 balls. He reached this achievement after batting for an impressive 508 minutes. Not long after, Conway and Williamson notched up a 50-run partnership, contributing significantly to the team total of 400 runs.
Despite a formidable start, the Black Caps saw some quick dismissals. Williamson fell to Justin Greaves for 31 runs, and shortly after lunch, Conway was adjudged leg before wicket to Greaves, marking the end of his innings. Daryl Mitchell and returning wicketkeeper Tom Blundell also struggled, contributing only 11 and 4 runs, respectively, before heading back to the pavilion.
As the day progressed, the New Zealand side reached 508 runs for 6 wickets at tea. Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips formed a solid partnership, adding 61 runs for the seventh wicket. Phillips was eventually caught in the slips for 29 runs, while Ravindra ended the innings not out on 72 runs. Captain Tom Latham called the innings shortly after, with spinner Ajaz Patel contributing a quickfire 30 runs off 30 balls.
West Indies’ Steady Opening Partnership
In response, openers John Campbell and Brandon King showcased resilience and skill, reaching a commendable total of 110 runs without loss by the end of the day. Campbell scored 45 runs, while King contributed significantly with 55 runs. Their partnership steadied the West Indies after New Zealand’s formidable innings.
As the West Indies prepare for the third day, they will look to build on this promising start. The challenge remains significant, with a target of 575 runs to chase down, but the opening pair’s performances have set a positive tone for the innings ahead. The stage is set for an exciting continuation of this Test match.
